As the 20th century came to a close, the world’s historians have looked back at the century’s greatest tragedy with an eye toward finding ways of truthfully recording and appropriately remembering history by paying proper tribute to man’s created horrific event. Holocaust memorials and museums have been constructed worldwide. Film and literature have examined the mix of holocaust heroes, villains and victims with endless varieties of philosophical debates and questions. The century ahead will be the telling road of the path lain down by us.

What is often neglected when compared to the barbarity of the acts of man are the millions of victims whose lives and stories can never be told. The unspoken words echo shamelessly through the halls of time, and reverberate with a ferociousness all their own begging for a place of rest. These are the words of millions of voices who never made it into a book or a movie or a story. Indeed, the majority of those who were murdered and perished have been denied the right of a life and the dignity of a burial.

The Sacred Grounds Foundation wishes to help the world properly remember that the injustice and indignity caused by man can be acknowledged with dignity and justice by man. What man can do, man can undo. It is the collective decision that will always stand time’s test.

We are proposing the consecration of Auschwitz-Birkenau as a burial site, one of the largest mass death sites in the world, and the construction of a Holocaust Sanctuary and Memorial for all people to be built on an appropriate place as deemed by the International Auschwitz Council.

The Memorial will contain a circular wall of names—as many names as can be found from those still alive as testimonial witnesses and from historical records. And as these names are etched and engraved onto the Plaza Wall, the dust from the names shall be gathered and placed into a well located at the center of the Sanctuary ensuring each name the right to a proper burial. We call this The Well of Souls.

In this way, the victim’s dust will fall into this Sacred Space and each name will have a burial.

I ask that you view the materials enclosed, open your hearts, and see the world from a pedestal one hundred years from now. We are writing the legacy. May we appropriately fulfill the wishes, dreams and finality of those who perished with a lasting legacy for those who live.
